Project Cargo by Sea

Heavy lift, break-bulk, ro-ro & flat rack shipments for large-scale projects

Project Cargo Sea Freight

Engineering-Led Ocean Logistics for Complex Projects

Project cargo by sea is fundamentally different from container shipping. It demands multi-disciplinary planning, naval architecture, port engineering, vessel selection, and on-ground logistics coordination, all integrated into a single, accountable solution. Fort & Freight manages end-to-end project cargo movements for global infrastructure, energy, and mining sectors.

We have shipped power generation turbines, transformer banks, telecom towers, mining plant, offshore equipment, and pre-engineered buildings, managing the entire journey from origin port to final installation site in some of Africa's most challenging locations.

What We Ship as Project Cargo

Power Generation Equipment

Gas and diesel generators, transformers, switchgear, turbine components, and substations for power projects worldwide.

Renewable Energy Components

Wind turbine towers, blades, nacelles, and solar panel systems requiring break-bulk or heavy-lift vessel handling.

Mining & Oil/Gas Plant

Processing plants, mining equipment, drilling rig components, pressure vessels, and pipeline material for extractive industry projects.

Infrastructure & Civil Works

Bridge beams, precast segments, steel structures, piling rigs, and construction equipment for roads, bridges, and rail projects.

Ro-Ro Vehicles & Plant

Self-propelled vehicles, agricultural machinery, cranes, and tracked equipment shipped roll-on/roll-off for cost-efficient ocean transport.

Pre-Engineered Buildings

Modular steel buildings, containerised facilities, and prefabricated structures for remote site camps, clinics, and schools.

Project Cargo, Our Approach

1

Engineering Assessment

We study cargo dimensions, weight, COG, and fragility, then select the optimal vessel type and loading method.

2

Vessel & Port Booking

We approach vessel operators, negotiate port berth allocation, and confirm the stowage plan and lashing specs.

3

Load & Secure

Specialist stevedores load and lash the cargo to the approved plan. Marine surveyor conducts a pre-departure inspection.

4

Port-to-Site Delivery

On arrival, our heavy haulage team takes over for the final road move to site, including permits, escort, and rigging.

Project Cargo, FAQs

Break-bulk refers to cargo that is too large, too heavy, or too awkwardly shaped to be placed inside a standard shipping container. It is loaded directly onto the vessel deck or in the hold using the ship's own cranes or shore-based heavy lift equipment. Containerised project cargo uses flat-rack or open-top containers for cargo that is out-of-gauge but within certain weight and dimension limits.
For complex project cargo, we recommend engaging us at the project procurement stage, ideally 3–6 months before the planned shipment. This allows adequate time for vessel selection, port berth booking, survey, lashing plan approval, and permit applications. Shorter notice is possible for simpler cargo but increases cost and risk.
Yes. Our sea freight and land freight heavy cargo teams work together as an integrated project team. We manage the ocean voyage, port discharge, customs clearance, and the road move from port to your installation site, including overload permits, police escort, and site rigging coordination. One contract, one point of accountability.
We need: detailed cargo description, dimensions (L : W : H), gross weight, centre of gravity (if known), number of pieces, origin port or factory location, destination port and site address. Drawings or photos are extremely helpful. The more technical detail you share, the more accurate and competitive our quotation will be.
